Kanchenjunga Trek Overview
Embark on the Kanchenjunga Trek, leading you to the Base Camp of the world’s third-highest peak, Kanchenjunga. Revel in the breathtaking views of the Jannu Himalayas from the Mirgin La pass and explore serene villages nestled on the borders of Sikkim and Tibet.
Standing proudly at 28,198 feet, Kanchenjunga, also known as the “Treasures of Snow,” ranks as the planet’s third-highest summit. First conquered by a British expedition in 1956 AD, this peak presents both a formidable challenge and incredible rewards.
Our commitment is that this high-altitude Himalayan trek will leave an enduring impression on you. Despite being a restricted region, Kanchenjunga remains one of the most secluded trekking areas, situated in Eastern Nepal alongside the Indian state of Sikkim. Here, the wilderness potentially houses Musk Deer, Blue Sheep, and even the mythical Yeti. Few individuals from the Western world have ventured into this remote expanse.
Embarking on this challenging journey commences with a delightful drive to Basantpur, followed by a three-day leisurely stroll through Sherpa and Chhetri villages, leading you to Suketar.
From this juncture onward, you’ll find yourself distanced from civilization, traversing along a ridge towards the Tamur River, treated to sweeping vistas of Makalu (27,825 feet) and Chamlang (24,000 feet). After navigating through forests and rhododendron thickets, the Kanchenjunga range spectacularly reveals itself. The path persists along the Tamur River, passing through Limbu Villages, where you might savor a cup of Tongba, and onward to the terraced village of Amjilassa and the renowned Sherpa settlement of Ghunsa (11,400 feet). The intriguing monastery in Ghunsa warrants a visit before the astounding sight of the untamed peaks, including Jannu (25,289 feet), often referred to as the “Mystery Peak” or “Terror Peak.” Continuing the journey, you’ll reach the edge of the Kanchenjunga Glacier and cross the lateral moraine to reach the junction of the Lhonak Glacier (15,680 feet) and the valley beyond. This junction guides you to the Lhonak campsite, an untouched landscape of indescribable beauty.
After a restful and exploratory interlude at Lhonak, including a day excursion to Pangpema (16,900 feet) to admire the north face of Kangchenjunga, you’ll retrace your path. If the team is inclined, there’s an option to traverse two passes, the Lapsang La (16,760 feet) and Sinion/Mirgin La (15,300 feet), depending on conditions. The final leg of your trek will lead you back to Suketar, where you’ll catch a flight to Biratnagar and connect to a flight to Kathmandu.
This marks the eastern stretch of trekking in Nepal. In the Eastern trekking region, one can further embark on adventurous journeys such as the Baruna Makalu Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest and Gokyo Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, Namche Bazaar, Khumjung Village Trek, 3 High Passes Trek, Tengboche, Pheriche, Chola Pass via Gokyo, and Everest View Trek.
