Sunauli (Nepal)/Bhairahawa (India): Situated in Rupandehi district, this busy border crossing operates 24/7 for all types of travelers. It’s the closest entry point to Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. Visa on arrival is available for most nationalities.
Kakarbhitta (Nepal)/Panitanki (India): Located in Jhapa district, this border is open from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM for authorized vehicles and pedestrians. It’s the main entry point for travelers coming from Darjeeling and Kolkata in India. Visa on arrival is not available; you must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepalese embassy or consulate.
China-Nepal Border:
Tatopani (Nepal): Situated in Sindhupalchowk district, this border is open from 9 AM to 5 PM for both cargo and passenger traffic. It’s the main entry point for travelers coming from Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Visa on arrival is not available; you must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepalese embassy or consulate.
Kerung Border (China-Nepal): Located in Rasuwa district, this high-altitude border is currently closed for passenger traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its reopening date is yet to be announced. Visa on arrival was not available before the closure; you would have needed a visa beforehand.
