TIMS Card for Trekking

The TIMS Card: Your Essential Key to Trekking in Nepal

The Himalayas beckon with their majestic peaks, serene valleys, and ancient trails. But before you embark on your Nepalese trekking adventure, there’s one crucial detail to sort out: the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card. This mandatory permit is your passport to exploring the wonders of Nepal’s mountains and plays a vital role in both your safety and the responsible management of trekking activities.

What is the TIMS Card?

The TIMS Card is a government-issued permit that tracks trekkers’ movements in Nepal. It helps authorities monitor trekker numbers, ensure safety through checkpoints, and gather valuable data for conservation efforts. Think of it as your official trekking license, essential for responsible adventure in the Himalayas.

Who Needs a TIMS Card?

Every trekker, regardless of nationality or trekking region, needs a TIMS Card. Whether you’re embarking on a solo Everest Base Camp trek, Langtang Valley Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, Manaslu Trek, Upper Mustang Trek, Helambu Valley Trek, Kanchenjunga Trek, Arun Valley Trek or a leisurely stroll through Langtang National Park, this permit is mandatory. No TIMS Card, no mountain magic!

Types of TIMS Cards

There are two main types of TIMS Cards:

Individual Trekker (FIT) Card: This green card is for independent trekkers who are not trekking with a registered agency.

Group Trekker Card: This blue card is for trekkers who are part of an organized group with a licensed guide.

How to Get a TIMS Card

Getting your TIMS Card is a breeze! Here are your options:

Online: Apply through the Nepal Tourism Board website, providing your passport details and trek information. Pay the fee and download your e-TIMS Card.

Upon Arrival: Visit the Tribhuvan International Airport arrival hall counter or the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu. Fill out the application form, pay the fee, and get your physical TIMS Card.

Cost of TIMS Card

The cost of your TIMS Card depends on your trekking duration and whether you’re an individual or group trekker:

Individual Trekker (FIT): US$20 for the first 10 days, US$10 for every additional 10 days.

Group Trekker: US$10 per person for the entire trek.

Benefits of the TIMS Card

Beyond legal compliance, the TIMS Card offers several benefits:

Safety: Your trek details are registered, aiding search and rescue efforts in case of emergencies.

Conservation: Fees contribute to protecting Nepal’s fragile ecosystems and cultural heritage.

Convenience: e-TIMS Cards are easily accessible on your phone, eliminating the need for physical copies.

Remember:

Carry your TIMS Card with you at all times during your trek.

Respect local customs and trekking regulations.

Leave no trace and minimize your environmental impact.
