Gaurishankar Himal Trek Overview

The Gaurishanker Himal Trek Trails lead to a remarkable destination known as Bigu Gompa, a grand nunnery housing over 300 nuns. This sacred site hosts two annual festivals, reminiscent of the famed Manirimdu celebrated at Tengboche Gompa in the Khumbu region. In the Sherpa language, “Biku” translates to “Seed,” reflecting the spiritual significance of this Sherpa village.

With breathtaking views of Gaurishankar (7,145m), Melungtse (7,181m), and other majestic peaks, as well as captivating landscapes, the journey showcases the beauty of the Rolwaling Valley. The village of Beding (3,690m) and its monastery, along with the serene Tso Rolpa lake, are among the main attractions along the route.

Situated west of Everest and close to the Tibetan border, the Rolwaling Himalaya offers a truly captivating experience. Starting from Barabise, the trail traverses the Tinsang La pass before descending to Bigu Gompa, where Buddhist nuns reside. The journey continues along the Bhotekosi River, leading into the remote and mysterious Rolwaling valley, renowned for its association with the legendary yeti.

Beding serves as the last permanent settlement along the trekking route, while Na Gaun stands as the highest altitude reached, though it functions solely as a summer settlement. The trek through the Rolwaling region promises an unforgettable adventure, steeped in spirituality, natural beauty, and the allure of ancient tales.
