Davis Falls

Davis Falls, also known as Patale Chango (meaning “underworld waterfall” in Nepali), is a magnificent waterfall located in Pokhara, Nepal. It’s a popular tourist destination for good reason – the waterfall plunges 500 feet into a hidden cave, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle.

Here’s what makes Davis Falls so special:

The Underground Tunnel: The most unique feature of Davis Falls is the 500-foot-long natural tunnel it creates after plunging over the cliff. This tunnel, known as Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, is said to be the abode of Lord Shiva, a Hindu deity. You can actually walk through the cave and emerge behind the waterfall for a truly unique perspective.

The Lush Surroundings: Davis Falls is surrounded by lush vegetation, making it a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Pokhara. The hike to the falls is short and easy, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.

The Local Legend: The name “Davis Falls” comes from a tragic story. In 1961, a Swiss couple was swept away by the sudden rise in water levels while swimming in the pool below the falls. The husband’s father requested that the falls be named after his daughter, but it was changed to “Davis” to avoid confusion with Devi’s Falls, another waterfall in the area.

Activities and Amenities: Besides enjoying the views and the refreshing spray of the waterfall, there are several things you can do at Davis Falls. You can go for a swim in the pool below the falls (taking safety precautions, of course), hire a boat to get closer to the waterfall, or explore the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. There are also several food stalls and souvenir shops near the falls.

Here are some additional details that you might find helpful:

Opening hours: The falls are open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Entrance fee: There is a small entrance fee for non-Nepalese visitors.

Getting there: Davis Falls is located about 2 kilometers south-west of Pokhara Airport. You can easily reach the falls by taxi, bus, or bicycle.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Davis Falls is during the monsoon season (July-August), when the water flow is at its most powerful. However, the falls are still beautiful to see during the dry season as well.
